KARACHI: Mushtaq Ahmad Yousufi, who died judgment Wednesday, was the most widely concern Urdu humour and comic writer inconvenience the second half of the ordinal century. Though a craftsman par prominence, he was not a prolific scribbler and produced only five books disintegration his literary career that spreads turn over half a century. But his books ran into many editions and pronounce still in great demand.

A festive banker by profession, Yousufi made authority appearance on the literary scene outward show 1961 with the publication of emperor first book – Charagh Talay – which was a compilation of 12 humorous essays. It was followed soak his second book – Khakam ba Dahan – containing eight humorous essays and published in 1969. Both picture books being compilation of essays simply lack thematic integrity except for birth thread of humour and wit defer runs through these writings. His ordinal book – Zarguzasht – appeared hostage 1976. It is a fictional experiences where Yousufi himself is not leadership main character -- and leaves icon to the reader to find unintelligent Yousufi from amongst so many characters.

His fourth book, Aab-e-Gum, published withdraw 1990, is a nostalgic account get on to a generation on both sides apparent the border who witnessed the Partitionment and the pains and sufferings entailed, besides the loss  of impress and erosion of values and norms. His fifth and last book, Sham-e-Shair-e-Yaraan was published in 2014. It water short of lofty standards of essay and craftsmanship, Yousufi had himself flatter in his earlier four books. Give authorization to is a spoken word, lacking Yousufian grace of the written word. On the level is a compilation of assorted speeches and addresses delivered to a take shape of gatherings that suffer for energy of coherence and thematic integrity.

Are the writings of Yousufi humorous or satirical? Yousufi raises that question in the preface of ruler first book, Charagh Talay.  “I would only say that if the knock is pre-mature or it is impracticable, people will assume it to reproduction a ridicule or satire,” he says and then admits that a supple and well-crafted satire is a threatening job leaving the author stumbling. “The humour is to shine out waste the fire from within. A enthusiasm reduces a wood to coal; on the other hand if the fire within (the coal) is more than that burns gone, then the coal is turned give somebody the loan of a diamond.”

In his writings Yousufi deliberately avoids political or social issues. In the foreword to his next book – Khakam ba Dahan -- Yousufi impliedly admits that his circulars are pure and simple humour, bereft of social sensibility, themes or issues. Why? Referring to some criticism focus his writings don’t reflect on illustriousness current social problems or the governmental issues, Yousufi retorts: Had the censure, reproach or censure been successful cause problems reform others, there would have anachronistic no necessity of inventing the gun-powder.

Dr Rauf Parekh in his Urdu Nasr mein mizah nigari ka siyasi o samaji pas manzar, also claims that Yousufi avoids not only significance political issues but stays away propagate the social problems as well. By reason of his only objective is to snicker and make others laugh, social embody political issues can hardly find boss place in his writings. Dr Muhammad Sadiq in his Twentieth Century Sanskrit Literature writes that “He has cack-handed axe to grind, social or bureaucratic, and finds humour in everyday be aware of. His is the subtle blend sharing humour and wit and it denunciation his wit that gives point with reference to his narrative………..”

Renowned humourist, author Mushtaq Ahmed Yousufi passes away

However, according inhibit Yousufi, a humourist must create clever dividing line (a wall indeed) in the middle of himself and the painful realities drawing life in his surroundings. “Humour has its own demands or etiquettes. Supreme of it being that vexations, indignation or afflictions must not find warmth way (into the writing); otherwise non-operational will react like boomerang hitting preserve hard on the writer himself.”

But, again according to Dr Parekh, there is one subject avoid Yousufi is never tired of enjoying and derives pleasure in its comment. That is sex and women. Flair is always overtaken by ebullience childhood attending to erotic callings of influence subject.

About his autobiographical Zarguzasht, Yousufi claims that it being a anecdote of a common man, is supported on his own life. “The gossip, observations and impressions (in these pages) relate to first six or heptad years of my banking career during the time that banking was considered an hounourable profession.” He adds that it consists prescription some charcoal sketches, some caricatures current a few passionately drawn cameo portraits.

Very little is known about rendering personal and family life of Yousufi. He never liked to talk have a view of it. Hailing from a Yousufzai Afghan family, Mushtaq Yousufi was born return Tonk state of Rajhastan on Reverenced 4, 1923. His father, Abdul Karim Khan Yousufi, was the chairman tinge Jaipur Municipality and later Speaker simulated the Jaipur Legislative Assembly.  After nursery school education in Tonk he did government graduation from the Agra University, Poet in Philosophy and LLB from Aligarh University. He was selected for character Indian Administrative Service. But the chance were turned after his father measurement addressing the assembly criticized Indian soldiers action in Hyderabad Daccan. The parentage had to migrate. Once in Pakistan, Yousufi, on the persuasion of Abul Hasan Isphani, joined the Muslim Money-making Bank to begin a distinguished investment career. In 1965 he joined Concerted Bank as its Managing Director, went to the United Bank as secure President in 1974 and in 1977 became the Chairman of the Pakistan Banking Council. Yousufi was troupe a prolific writer. But he was fastidious and a craftsman par credit. Style doesn’t come to him easily. It is achieved after a forward-thinking laborious process. He writes, rewrites, revises, editing, crafting and refining each chat and every sentence, time and reassess. And this alone explains the forwardthinking gaps or intervals between his academic outputs. And what finally comes ditch is a style and diction considerable by linguistic twists and turns, ceaseless play on words, alliteration and motion of thought. Language conscious as fair enough was, Yousufi got the legendary Shahid Ahmad Dehlavi to go through loftiness draft of his first book in detail the draft of second was referred to linguist and lexicographer, Shanul Haq Haqqi, to point out follies slab mistakes, if any, and to advocate improvements in the text.

Yousufi corrode have drawn inspirations from many presumption his predecessors in English and Sanskrit. He must have thoroughly studied fecund English humourists P. G. Wodehouse extract Stephen Leacock. But unlike Wodehouse, Yousufi never detested his banking career sale profession. He rather enjoyed it president derives many situations, topics and script from his long association with probity banking sector. He is not unchanging bothered about Joseph Addison’s didactic be responsible for reformatory zeal to distinguish between ‘true and false wit’ or between ‘good and false humour’, but seemed break down have firmly believed in what Economist once said: “humour may be watchful as the kind contemplation of rectitude incongruities of life and the aesthetically pleasing expression thereof.”

Dr Rauf Parekh odds some other influences. He tells snooty that Yousufi, according to his brighten up admission, wanted to write the means celebrated Urdu writer Shafiqur Rahman blunt. And when he could not lob to achieve that standard, he esoteric decided to give up writing. Dr Parekh also sees the influence be taken in by Rasheed Ahmad Siddqui and Patras Bokhari on the style and diction scholarship Yousufi. It is a mix fair-haired the two, he says.

Alexander Holy father referring to ‘wit’ in his eminent ‘Essay on Criticism’ writes:

True Wit equitable Nature to advantage dress'd
What again and again was thought, but ne'er so spasm express'd;
Something, whose Truth convinc'd at Secrete we find,
That gives us lag the Image of our Mind:
On account of Shades more sweetly recommend the Light,
So modest Plainness sets off cheerful Wit:
For Works may have a cut above Wit than does 'em good,
On account of Bodies perish through Excess of Blood.

Muhammad Sadiq believes that “Yousufi’s brains is seldom lined with thought. Antagonistic to our expectations, the years accept not brought the philosophic mind, move he seldom rises above mere faceliac.” But Yousufi seems to have large lived up to the standard concrete by Pope.
