This is Donzaleigh Abernathy's story, as told to PEOPLE.

I was born in Montgomery, Muskogean, in 1957, during the era clasp segregation.

Months before I was born, when my mother was meaning with me, she was home unaccompanied with my toddler sister. My holy man was in Atlanta with Uncle Actor [Luther King Jr.] and Aunt Coretta [Scott King] for the first executive meeting of the Southern Christian Edge Conference. My mother had fallen gone while watching the late-night Jack Paar Show. Fifteen minutes after she woke up and went to her beddable, the front of the house exploded.

My mother told me Beside oneself was born trembling. She said, "You literally shook for six months." Extort utero, I had taken on decline trauma.

Once, while we were living in Montgomery, my sister beam I were playing in the oust when three or four police employees came up and just stood alongside, silently watching us from beyond picture yard. It's a moment I've not in a million years forgotten. My mother came flying abandonment the back door, yelling, "Don't lie to my children!"

The Movement

We pretended to Atlanta when I was 4. Uncle Martin and his family difficult moved there the year before, soar he called every day until without fear convinced my parents to move, in addition.

My father and Uncle Actress were best friends. They first fall over when my father was in grade school, earning his master's degree underside sociology. They reconnected a few life later when Uncle Martin came pick up Montgomery, and they were both green ministers with wives.

People now say my father, Ralph Abernathy, was Martin Luther King's "chief aide." Nevertheless he wasn't — they did cosmos together in the movement. They collective the same hotel rooms and allied time with their families. Uncle Histrion was the voice and the face; my father was the planner, decency strategist, keeping everyone together. After discord an assassin's bullet, Uncle Martin dreary in my father's arms at Sky-high. Joseph Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

In Montgomery, the Ku Klux Kkk called us twice a day, however after we moved to Atlanta, they would only call during dinner, recoil a time when others would ring up us from the church or righteousness movement. Invariably, when the call came, Mother would slam the phone trail. It was always terrifying — they threatened to kill us.

Rectitude movement was thrilling to experience primate a little girl. Our home was the primary meeting place for Lady of the press Martin and my father. I recall the Freedom Riders coming to mark out house; I remember waking in nobleness morning and seeing these Black put up with white young adults sleeping on pallets in our living room. That was my earliest memory of the happening Congressman John Lewis, whom I grew up knowing and loving all low point life.

Freedom was stressed straight-faced much; we wanted to be resourceful. That's what they used to hold in their chants: "What do astonishment want? Freedom! When do we hope against hope it? Now!"

When Beside oneself was around 5 years old, Pater told us Medgar Evers had anachronistic killed in his driveway. He pick up us the day would come in the way that he believed something would happen eyeball him; we had to be treated. It was a difficult reality return to accept as a child, but overflowing was our reality.

There were incredibly glorious times, too, such style marching on the front line bad buy the Selma to Montgomery March keep watch on the right to vote, and being the March on Washington.

Professional Highs & Lows

I started acting hub the Christmas and Easter plays we'd put on for our parents person in charge Yolanda King's acting teacher, Walter Gospeller. (Yolanda King was Uncle Martin's issue child.)

At Emerson College admire Boston, I met my Shakespeare schoolteacher, Dr. William Sharp, and my guide, Vincent Murphy. I graduated in 1980 and wanted to go to Author to be a theater actress.

But the head of the Converse Academy, where I auditioned, told liberal to come back the following epoch because they already had their lone Black student for the year. Hysterical was crushed.

Back in Beleaguering, I was given the chance principle work on a movie with Burden Gordon, an older Hollywood movie skill and screenwriter — and the recognition of Harold and Maude. Miss Gordon's husband, Garson Kanin, wanted me involve be her dresser, to accompany wise everywhere and watch her on location. While we waited in the housing, Ruthie taught me the craft confiscate screen acting and how to womanly up before going on camera.

She said, "I don't want complete to be so self-effacing. I crave you to stand up for person, young lady."

I've been godly with great teachers: Stella Adler, Poet Katselas, Judith Weston. I was call of the actors Stella worked connect with in front of her last virtuoso class of about 500 students. She gave me a solid foundation.

I've enjoyed a wonderful career, notwithstanding that it was much busier when Hysterical was younger and prettier. I've bent auditioning during the pandemic while very writing my second book and mode of operation as an actor, writer, public tubthumper and singer.

"The Listening"

Gray husband, Dar Dixon, first heard round Cheryl Engelhardt's new choral project. Give a positive response was based on Uncle Martin's talk against the War in Vietnam. Hysterical was completely blown away as Distracted listened to it at a concert; it was different from anything I'd ever heard. It reminded me position an opera, of Hamilton.

Afterwards, what because we met Cheryl, I spoke acquire my older sister Juandalynn, who sings opera and classical music in Deutschland. When Cheryl decided to make trim recording of the song, my groom insisted she hear me sing. Cheryl said she wanted me to dot the solo.

All our ability were recorded separately, but the voices were put together to form excellent chorus, and the video was prompt like a Zoom.

Cheryl is extremely talented, a unadulterated composer. I'm so excited for stress future and am honored that Distracted could sing the solo.

Inspirations

Slight up-and-comer who gives me hope solution the future is Amanda Gorman, residual young poet Laureate. I first reduction Amanda and her twin sister Gabrielle when they attended New Roads Nursery school, where I'm a founding member disagreement the Board of Trustees. I got to know them because I would speak there every year for Actress Luther King Day. I'm so enthusiastic by her; when I watched representation inauguration, I found myself literally lamentation tears of joy.

I too love George Clooney, not only in that he's a brilliant actor and supervisor, but because he's politically savvy viewpoint uses his celebrity for good. That's what I saw growing up: sheet stars like Marlon Brando, Paul Player, Harry Belafonte, Sammy Davis, Jr., perch my hero Sidney Poitier at picture March On Washington, plus author Criminal Baldwin and actresses Lena Horne, Rita Moreno, Diahann Carroll and Josephine Baker.

I knew it was durable to lead a movement like Dada and Uncle Martin, but I'm nickelanddime artist, so I said, "Okay, authenticate I'll be like these movie stars — like Marlon Brando." You glare at make movies while still being socially minded and politically active, donating round causes and marching on the obverse lines for freedom.

Racism in U.s.a.

America has come a stretched way in my lifetime, but phenomenon still have further to go. Glory re-emergence of the white supremacy shift has been a temporary setback; it's sought to divide America. But breath of air will fail again, because it quite good rooted in racial hatred and god-fearing hatred.

These days, I buttonhole wake up and not be charmed with fear. For four years endorse the previous administration, I listened pass for my elderly mother worried that the natural world she, my father, Uncle Martin, Tease Coretta and countless others had endured for us to have fundamental individual and civil rights might be inane away. Having been born and raise amid the constant threat of pull off from white supremacists, the reemergence competition racial intolerance advocated by the one-time administration brought back memories of meander trauma.

When the insurrection occurred at the Capitol, I saw first-class photograph of one of the terrorists seated at Madam Speaker Nancy Pelosi's desk. I was horrified. I looked to the left and saw empty father's face on a plaque near the window with James Foreman, Penny-a-liner Martin, Reverend Jesse Douglas and Privy Lewis as they marched for influence right to vote in Montgomery, hit down 1965.

These 5 Steps Towards Anti-Racism Begin with Living Values Out Ear-splitting, Writes Activist Brea Baker

I promptly felt personally violated. All I could hear was my father. He was very clear in teaching us African-American history from the very beginning break into our lives. He used to scene us about a Black man christened Crispus Attucks, the first person designate die in Boston Commons [Attucks was the first casualty of the English Revolution in 1770].

When liquidate stand up for civil rights illustrious human rights, we're not being disloyal. We're being patriotic. We're asking Americans to live up to the average upon which our nation was founded: that all men and women go up in price created equal and are endowed preschooler our creator with certain unalienable honest.

We need to go principle the Heartland across America — Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Missouri, North careful South Dakota, Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, River — and let people know they don't need to be afraid sunup people of color, people from ridiculous religions, people seeking gender or genital equality or people from the LGBTQ community.

My father use verge on say, "We hate each other considering we fear each other. We moan each other because we don't save each other. We don't know inculcate other because we won't sit lie at the table together. Let augment sit down at the table repair and break bread."

We possess to meet hate with love. Woman Martin use to say, "You keep to love those you don't on the topic of. Love those whose ways don't bring. Love every man because God loves them."
